A joint exercise with international partners to test oil spill response capabilities in Morobe Province.

NMSA has completed a joint marine pollution response exercise in Lae, Morobe Province, working alongside international partners to test Papua New Guinea's oil spill response capability.

The exercise simulated a fuel release in the port approaches and rehearsed notification, containment and shoreline protection procedures under the National Marine Oil Spill Contingency Plan.

Exercise outcomes

  • Response teams were mobilised and on the water within the target notification window.
  • Containment boom was deployed to protect sensitive shoreline areas.
  • Coordination arrangements between NMSA, the port operator and provincial authorities were validated.

Findings from the exercise will inform updates to the contingency plan and to equipment stockpiles held at major ports.
