Qualifications & Certification
NMSA issues Certificates of Competency to seafarers who meet national and STCW standards. This covers both new issuance and renewals — see the fee schedule for current charges.
Training Requirements (STCW)
Training and watchkeeping standards align with the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW). Seafarers must complete their training with an approved training provider and meet the course requirements applicable to the certificate sought.
Registration
NMSA registers seafarers and maintains seafarer records, including certificates held, endorsements and sea service.
How to Apply
- Download the relevant application form from the Resources page.
- Complete the form and gather the required supporting documents — proof of identity, evidence of approved training, and documented sea service.
- Pay the applicable fee (see the fee schedule).
- Submit your application to NMSA’s Maritime Administration Division.
